that Shena had last year qualified for All India Services and got
selected for IRS. She is the elder of two siblings. Her mother is a

Call it the mother of all paradoxes. Haryana and Punjab have the worst
child sex ratios - in that order - in the country. But two girls, Shena
Aggarwal and Rukmani Riar, from small towns of these states have topped
India’s most prestigious exam, conducted by the Union Public Service
Commission for appointment to the civil services.
Shena
Aggarwal (25), a resident of Yamunanagar in Haryana, secured the first
rank in the civil services examination-2011, the result of which was
declared on Friday. Rukmani Riar, 24, of Hoshiarpur (Punjab), got the
second position.
Shena hit the bull’s eye in her third attempt.
She is an MBBS (bachelor's in medicine and bachelor's in surgery)
graduate from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New
Delhi. She was also the all-India topper in the Pre-Medical Test (PMT)
in 2004.
She is currently undergoing 16-month training in the
Indian Revenue Service (IRS), which started in December last year at
Nagpur.
Shena told HT that she was extremely happy but also
quite surprised to come up trumps. She started preparations for the exam
after her internship at AIIMS in January 2010. She picked psychology
and medical science as her subjects and then started brushing up her
knowledge of current affairs.
Shena said she did not go for coaching, but joined a test series in New Delhi.
Shena’s father Dr CK Aggarwal is a dentist in Yamunanagar; her mother
is a housewife. A beaming Dr Aggarwal said, “She has always made us
proud. She stood first in the Class-12 CBSE examination in 2004, and was
also the topper of the 2009 MBBS batch from AIIMS.”
Rukmani, a
gold-medallist post-graduate in social sciences from the Tata Institute
of Social Sciences, Mumbai, excelled in the UPSC exam in her maiden
attempt.
