The Rajya Sabha has passed the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2010 after negating the Opposition amendments by voice vote.
Under the new law, a provision has been made to restrict the grant of decree of divorce on the ground of irretrievable breakdown of marriage if the court is satisfied that adequate provision for the maintenance of children born out of the marriage, has not been made consistently with the financial capacities of the parents.
Initiating the discussion, Dr Najma Heptullah of the BJP has asked the government to bring a uniform law applicable to women of all sections. She alleged that the government has not done anything for the welfare of muslim women.
Responding to this, Renuka Choudhary of the Congress said that her party always stood for women of all sections. Her party colleague Dr. Ram Prakash said, divorces can be minimized if the daughters and daughters-in-law are treated at par in the society.
