In several states, there have been protests against the acquisition of land for various projects. We explain the main issues, and link to the key Bills that are proposed to reform the current system. We also post our summaries, analyses and related documents.
Currently, such acquisition is governed by The Land Acquisition Act, 1894. The UPA-1 government had introduced an Amendment Bill in 2007.
It had also introduced The Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill for people displaced on account of such acquisition. Both Bills lapsed in 2009. In May 2011, the National Advisory Council proposed a new Bill to address these issues.
One issue in India is that the records of land holding cannot be easily verified. This opens the possibility of disputes after purchase. Industrial enterprises use this fact to argue that the government should acquire land on their behalf. To address this issue, the government has drafted the Land Titling Bill, and asked for public feedback. |
