It has been precisely 100 years since the champaran movement took place . In the light of this fact , Discuss the champaran movement significance in Indian history with a focus on Gandhiji’s Satyagraha ?
Champaran movement was first satyagraha undertaken by Gandhiji in India , when he returned from South Africa . It was in 1917 , that he came to know about the plights of cultivators of chamapran , a village in Northern Bihar , where peasants were forced to grow indigo in 3 out of 20 parts of their field . This forced system of growing indigo was known as Tinkathia system . Indigo was exported to Britain and this was not advantageous for the peasants . Moreover , indigo degrades the quality of the field and overall production of other crops also decreases . Gandhi , came to champaran to enquire into this unfair system. After the court trial , Gandhi was given the permission to held an enquiry and champaran enquiry committee submitted the findings . The major finding of the committee to abolish the tinkathia sytem was accepted and this became the successful satyagraha . In the movement , Cultivators were asked to voluntarily submit their complains in writing . Methods as simple as “voluntary works “ were used by Gandhiji . This movement further strengthned the Gandhiji’s faith in fighting Non violently for truth . His convictions that one should not vow down to injustice at any cost and truth can be upheld by using Non Violent means also . The success of chamapran movement paved the way for more movements to come . It was a beginning , the end to which was Britishers leaving India in 1947 .
