The Survey of India which is the principal mapping agency of the country is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. On this occasion, a new web portal, called ‘nakshe’ was launched. The topographic maps are made by the Survey of India in accordance with the National Map Policy of 2005. The nakshe web portal will contain free available maps which can be downloaded easily.
The web portal was launched along with Geo portal and web services platform and a panel discussion on Geospatial paradigm in India that deals with the users’ perspective on geo spatial policy framework in India.
Many Scientists and Ministers were present in the occasion. The web portal nakshe is an important step towards promotion of the digital India campaign. By the help of this portal it will be very easy for students as well as tourists to study the maps easily. The survey of India has mapped each and every part of the country long ago and these maps have helped the country since time immemorial. Therefore even today, these maps find equal importance. Most of the developmental activities have been done based on these maps.
The Survey of India is the oldest scientific department of the country. It prepares the topographic maps or open series maps containing natural and man-made geographical features including terrain or topography.
