A boy scored 54% in 10th standard. He took admission in arts as he could barely understand English. He scored less than 50% in graduation. That made him ineligible for NET.
He was not a topper by any standards but still decided to give a try to UPSC, so he came to Pune. He was financially weak, so had to sleep on station for few days.
One friend helped him getting a room in hostel, he stayed with him and took admission in M.A. He still had no money, so he chose to work under ‘earn and learn’ scheme. After toiling hard for entire day, he would get 40 Rs. He worked hard but success eluded him as he failed in state services 5 times consecutively.
He struggled even harder to clear Upsc. He failed 6 times. In 7th attempt, his hard work paid off and he got selected as IRS. His name is Shree Bharat Andhale. An IRS officer of 2010 batch currently posted in Nasik.
So, he was never a topper throughout his academic life. He never bagged first ranks nor held medals. He didn't come from an affluent family either, infact he was the first one to clear SSC in his entire generation.
What he had, my friend, is grit and the will to succeed. Yes, he struggled a bit and tasted way too many failures but in the end it was worth it. So yes, no topper holds monopoly over this exam. This exam is all about your passion for service, hard work and pure consistency. Don't worry if you aren't a topper.
