Case : You are a boss of a small private organisation. You are about to meet important clients who will be visiting your office shortly. But you get a call from your wife that your son who is suffering from autism is performing dance in his school, which is first for you both and a very happy occasion. The meeting which was scheduled can not be postponed, moreover if the meeting is successful, your company benefits enormously in terms of new contracts. As you deem son’s performance is more important than the business deal, you ask your personal assistant to call the clients and tell them that you are unwell and the meeting can be held tomorrow.
Question:Identify different personal and professional ethical issues present and examine if any values have been compromised in the above case study?
In the given scenario the fundamental ethical issue is that the boss should not have told the subordinate to lie about him being unwell bcoz its just unethical at least in this scenario where an alternative could be found without compromising the integrity and confidence of the client and alternative like meeting the client using internet video calling or if possible shift the meeting to some different time on the same day after explaining him the reason for delay using emotional intelligence ,so that the client does not feel too much frustrated . so the conflict here is the conflict in personal and organisational interest and the boss duty should be to balance out both and he should try to inform other colleague of his to meet the client in the worst case scenario but there should not be any use of deception as it would undermine professional ethics if the client finds it out and even otherwise .so prudence lies in that first priority should be given to his son as he needs his father's moral and emotional support to fight his problem of autism and succeed in all spheres of life
