International Solar Alliance (ISA)
International Solar Alliance was launched by Indian PM Modi and French President Hollander on the side-lines of Paris climate meeting COP21.
It aims is to bring on board all countries lying between tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn to utilize full potential of solar energy in these regions. These regions are going to have maximum growth in energy needs in future.
Objectives
- Mobilize $1 trillion investment in Solar Energy by 2030
- Generate 1000 GW solar energy output by 2030; make solar technology cheaper and more widespread use
- Promote R&D to reduce costs and make it technologically cheap.
- India has committed to produce 100 GW of 175 GW through solar energy.
How it will help India
As a foreign policy tool, establishing India as voice of Authority among developing nations to lead the change and pushed in a sustainable and green world. Prove as a Countering force to China.
It will help build alliances in the region and as first draft based intergovernmental organization based in India, increase India's International presence. Later would spread to other forms of renewable sources like wind and bio gas.
Challenges
- Short term: increasing cost of Solar energy equipment especially silicon
- Long term: infrastructure funding in poorer countries, tariff disincentivizing private investment, governance
