UPSC Prelims 2019 is over.Once again UPSC has proved that you cannot take this exam lightly.Paper was set in such a way that ,only those who have put in consistent effort throughout the year would score well.Current affairs questions were more of analytical rather than factual which requires newspaper reading and notes making.Prelims 2019 has once again made it clear that prelims requires an integrated approach.Questions were set from the areas generally considered subjective. One cannot risk preparing for mains alone for 6-7 months then devoting 3-4 months for prelims. These two now need to go together.
Those who are scoring above 100 should immediately start preparing for mains. Those who are in the bracket of 90-95. should focus on optional without wasting anytime.Even if you are not able to make it to the list, strengthening optional will give you an edge for next year and prevent you from getting into futile discussion on cutoffs. For aspirants below 90 take some time to introspect where it went wrong. This introspection should be in a positive way to correct those mistakes and not to fall into pall of gloom.Note down the areas you need to work upon. And start working on it.

Now the question is when one should start preparing for Prelims if he/she is a beginner? As explained earlier, current trends of UPSC shows that you cannot rely on any ready made material neither reading textbooks only is enough. You need to keep reading and revising throughout the year in order to take the surprises thrown at you by the UPSC. If you are going to take the exam in 2020,right time is NOW.Complete a part of syllabus everyday and attempt mock.Attempting mock tests consolidates the memory.Since the syllabus is vast ,there is a constant problem of forgetting what was read in the beginning by the time you finish the syllabus. When you keep pushing the mocks for the end or wait till you finish the syllabus, you end up not practicing at all since you have already forgotten what you had read earlier and you again need to go through it to take the mock tests. This means that you do not know whether the topics you have read is etched in your mind perfectly or not unless you slove one or two questions on it.
